Tour Overview

The Rongai route stands out as the sole path approaching Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border. Despite gaining traction among climbers, Rongai experiences low traffic. It serves as the preferred choice for those seeking an alternative to the bustling Marangu route, individuals craving a more secluded trek, and those venturing during the rainy season.
A minimum of six days is necessary for this route, with seven days being the recommended duration. While the scenery may not offer the same variety as the western routes, Rongai compensates by traversing genuine wilderness areas for several days before merging with the Marangu route at Kibo camp. This route descends via the Marangu route. Moderately challenging, Rongai comes highly recommended, especially for those with limited backpacking experience.

The initial climb is done in the dark and requires headlamps or flashlights, with the descent starting after a rest and lunch at Kibo.
