Mt. Meru is situated in the heart of Arusha National Park, approximately 50 miles west of Mount Kilimanjaro. It stands as a massive volcano, reaching 14,980 feet (4,565 meters) in height. This trek serves as an ideal warm-up for Mount Kilimanjaro due to its altitude acclimatization and hiking distances. Moreover, it attracts hikers who prefer fewer crowds and a challenging ascent.
As Mount Meru is located within Arusha National Park, hikers are required to climb with an armed ranger due to the diverse range of wildlife inhabiting the mountain. Along the lower slopes, hikers may encounter elephants, giraffes, and buffalo. As the ascent continues, the trail follows the north rim of the volcano's crater along a dramatic ridge line. Throughout the climb, designated huts along the trail provide accommodations for hikers. Upon reaching the summit at sunrise, hikers are rewarded with spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the Mount Meru Crater.
