BIRDS IN THE USAMBARA MOUNTAINS

The Usambara Mountains stand out in East Africa due to their natural regions still enveloped in tropical forests, rendering them immensely ecologically significant and a hotspot for biodiversity with numerous protected areas. These forests are home to several bird species, including the Usambara eagle-owl, Usambara akalat, Usambara weaver, and African violet. Additionally, birdwatchers can also catch sight of species such as the Mountain buzzard, Crown eagle, Eastern bronze-naped pigeon, Lemon and Dusky turtle dove, and the Hartlaub’s Turaco.

You can find over 3,000 plant species and over 600 tree species thriving in the Usambara Mountains. Therefore, it is renowned as one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots. It attracts naturalists and nature lovers from all over the world who come to watch birds, study trees and flowers, or observe butterflies. Several species are endemic to the Usambara forests.

Hiking Activities:

You can embark on a hike with a local guide and explore the diverse beauty of this expansive area. On a clear day, you can see the grass plains of Mkomazi as well as Kilimanjaro and relish in the stunning vistas that this area offers. During this unique trek, you will have the chance to encounter the locals, who will greet you with waves and friendly smiles. The locals are known for their hospitality, and if you show openness and interest, you may be spontaneously invited to learn more about their way of life.
You can ascend to the Irente viewpoint to enjoy a panoramic vista of Mazinde village nearly 1000 meters below, as well as the vast Maasai plains beyond.
Alternatively, you can stroll through the fertile farmlands of Jaegertal to visit a fruit tree nursery and expand your knowledge about various fruit tree varieties and their cultivation techniques. Another option is the "Growing Rock" tour, commencing from Soni, where you ascend to the top of Kwamongo mountain, renowned for its butterflies, and savor views of Soni, Lushoto, and the Handeni plains from the summit.
